Abu Hayyan Al-Tawhidi is the sixth publication in Dutch produced by Moussem and Bebuquin with a view to introducing and making accessible theatre repertoire from the Arabic-speaking world.
Tayeb Saddiki (1938–2016) is regarded as one of the founders of contemporary Moroccan theatre. This play, written in 1983, is based on a classical work from the 10th century by the philosopher of the same name. In a grotesque tribunal, Al-Tawhidi is put on trial for his freethinking. Saddiki plays an intriguing game with the past and constructs a colourful spectacle in which he pulls out all the stops.
In this video (Dutch spoken), translator Nisrine Mbarki and philosopher Michiel Leezenberg discuss the translation, the background and the significance of the play.
