about - residencies
Divided into local long-term trajectories or short international residencies, we offer studio space and wide-ranging support to around twenty artists each year, set within the creative dynamism and metropolitan reality of Brussels.
The two distinct programmes are mutually reinforcing and facilitate exchange across various disciplines. Both are designed to provide artists with structured support for their artistic careers, fostering the emergence of new transnational narratives in the arts. Spanning the performing arts and visual arts, Moussem selects artists with hybrid practices that engage with decolonial, intercultural and migratory themes. Artists with multiple identities who address the gaps in the field or inhabit its in-between spaces.
long-term residents
With the local residencies, we focus on long-term development and reflection. We focus on supporting research within the creative process, the broader development of the artist’s career and the overall deepening of their body of work. The support is tailored in mutual consultation and encompasses artistic, administrative, (pre-)productional, communication and financial elements. Long-term follow-up allows us to provide breathing space for creative processes, and to advise on production and presentation once the right moment and partners have been found.
international residencies
The short-term, international residencies are based on the exchange of socio-political issues and themes. How can we introduce artists to the context of Brussels, where a series of common questions from the Global South call for shared, collective proposals? What perspective emerges from the collision with a different context that is brought closer? During their stay, the artists are supported artistically, administratively, production-wise and in terms of communication. The residency concludes with an open studio: for the artist, an opportunity to engage in dialogue with the local field; for our audience, a chance to gain an insight into artistic working processes.
