about moussem
who we are
Moussem is a nomadic arts centre in Brussels. We support artists in researching, developing and presenting new multivoiced narratives that forge links between art and society. Through an extensive residency framework, a variety of projects, and urban programmes Moussem aims to build the cultural canon of tomorrow.
what we do
Moussem operates transnationally: locally rooted, globally oriented.
Our workspace is located in Anderlecht, from where we offer approximately twenty artists each year a stable and long-term support framework for the development, production, and presentation of their work.
Residencies follow two tracks: short-term international residencies or long-term residency trajectories for local artists, and are clustered by discipline into performing arts and visual arts.
Through presentation formats such as the biennial Moussem Cities festival, Moussem creates visibility for international artists and a context for their work, focused on exchange, resonance, and collision.
Through projects, we supplement our regular activities with thematic series, activity groups, recurring showcases, or community-oriented initiatives. These serve as a springboard to launch new ideas, respond to specific events, or test new formats. One such project is Communities, a hub of activities that forges lasting bonds between Moussem and the inhabitants of our neighborhood.
Moussem’s artistic narrative is shaped through collaborations with various partners in Flanders, Brussels, and beyond.
Moussem is supported by the Flemish Government, the Flemish Community Commission, and the municipality of Anderlecht.
towards an apartheid free zone
Together with 758 cultural institutions & 2302 cultural workers, Moussem commits to the Belgian and Dutch cultural boycott of the Israeli state and of all Israeli institutions and companies.
For years, we have collaborated intensely with Palestinian artists and we pledge to continue on doing so. Working together with artists in resisting apartheid, racist oppression, imperialist exploitation and the violation of human rights in occupied Palestine and other oppressed regions, by supporting their own livelihood as artists and sharing their stories, is a central driving force of Moussem’s work as an arts institute.
juist is juist
Integrity, sustainability, responsibility and transparency are Moussem’s core values. Moussem operates in accordance with the principles and tools provided by the Juist is Juist platform for fair collaboration in the arts sector.
