Moussem Belgica: Transnational Stories

01.11.2024

To mark the 60th anniversary of the bilateral agreement between Belgium and Morocco on the recruitment of workers, Moussem Centre Nomade des Arts, based in Brussels, is organising a series of events in the cities of Tangier and Oujda. Moussem Belgica – Transnational Stories highlights the rich cultural exchanges with Morocco through three artistic disciplines: visual arts, literature and film.

Moussem Belgica offers an in-depth insight into the new stories that artists with Moroccan roots bring to their host country. These stories enrich, diversify and renew the Moroccan artistic tradition whilst simultaneously creating an alternative canon. Moussem Belgica – Transnational Stories spans six decades of migration and cultural exchange and explores the impact of this historical relationship from an artistic and cultural perspective. It pays tribute to the profound cross-pollination that characterises the worlds of art, literature and film in an increasingly globalised society. “Artists bring,” writes Mohamed Ikoubaân, founder of Moussem, “new stories to the host country, making it more diverse and global … AND they also renew the Moroccan art scene… which has become more global and deepens diversity, far beyond what we sometimes think.”
