Waiting
Mokhallad Rasem
Rasem asked four other theatre makers to join him in reflecting on the theme of waiting in the light of Samuel Beckett’s ‘Waiting for Godot’. What meaning does the text have nowadays in a world awash with an atmosphere of uncertainty, agitation, wars and conflicts, oppression and exclusion? The Arab countries have long been waiting for a saviour in the face of this “absurd theatre situation without any dramaturgy”. The Arab people seem to be weary of struggling and condemned to wait for better times. How do Arab, Serb, Flemish, Dutch and Turkish theatre makers view the state of the world? What does waiting signify? Rasem compiles these productions in the form of a one-night festival where the crossing perspectives of these creators seek to encourage the audience to feel what waiting means for each one of us.
