Moussem Festival Lente 2007

It’s party time at MuHKA all spring long. Moussem is ‘taking over’ the museum for two months. Together with visual artist Charif Benhelima and MuHKA, the non-profit organisation has brought a special project to fruition. UNTITLED seeks to break away from the traditional formats of both exhibitions and festivals: a performing arts festival and a visual arts presentation merge here. The MuHKA spaces are transformed from mere exhibition spaces into meeting places.

Moussem grew out of the concerns of a number of Flemish people of Moroccan origin. They did not see in Flanders the full cultural spectrum they had expected from Morocco. Initially, they brought music; later, literature, dance and theatre were added, and in the meantime, they also engage in social debate when appropriate. Because Moussem wanted to broaden its horizons, contact was sought with MuHKA. Through this collaboration, both organisations aim to build bridges and transcend their own spheres. In doing so, great attention is paid to creating a good ‘vibe’ for a festival venue.

From the numerous explorations, ideas, discussions and consultations that have taken place since 2005, a multifaceted programme has emerged that cannot possibly be summed up under a single heading. Expect a fine mix of exhibition, music, spoken word and film. With Morocco as a point of reference, the festival also demonstrates great openness towards other communities.

What we bring you transcends the obvious, offers different perspectives, is a confrontation on various levels, is indescribable… is UNTITLED. We invite you, as a visitor to the Moussem Festival Spring 2007, to express your experiences during the festival in a title of your own choosing. WITHOUT A TITLE will therefore ultimately become a project with many titles.

Originally, a Moussem is a cultural and economic event or festival. Some Moussems have a religious character and are dedicated to a saint associated with a particular region. Etymologically, it also refers to a seasonal event that recurs regularly.
